What Defines a Farmhouse Kitchen Table ?

by Mark on March 4, 2010

For the uninitiated, it can sometimes be difficult to define what makes a table a farmhouse kitchen table. There are some general characteristics that most farmhouse sets have in common:

Normally rectangular in shape ( although round tables exist they are not as common )

Planks of wood running length-ways make up the table top

There is usually an apron that sits underneath the work surface

Sometimes these aprons have shelves or drawers

Now for the legs of the table. These can vary from piece to piece, but they can be plain or they can be round with intricate patterns.

It is also very common for the tabletop to be unpainted, waxed and varnished, and for the legs and apron of the table to be painted in one solid color. The wooden table surface makes for a pleasing contrast with the rest of the piece.

Of course, just about any wooden table nowadays could fall under the umbrella term ‘farm table’ . But the main difference between a copy and a genuine set is the build quality. Genuine farm tables will last a lifetime, and any large kitchen without one just does not feel quite right to me. The vast amount of farm tables available these days is great for consumers, since they can be found in smaller sizes, so those with small kitchen need not feel left out! Look for a farmhouse kitchen table for your house today.
